How to sell on ChatGPT in 2026: what works after Instant Checkout

Selling on ChatGPT in 2026 no longer means a checkout button inside the chat. To sell on ChatGPT today you give it a clean product feed and product pages it can read, and you make your own mobile checkout ready for a buyer who lands straight on a product page: OpenAI pulled ordinary merchants out of Instant Checkout in March 2026, so the sale finishes on your store. An AI-first team can get an existing store there 4 times cheaper and 4 times faster than traditional hand-written development.

Below is what changed this year, where AI shoppers can actually buy in October 2026, five steps to make a store sellable through ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and what that work costs.

Can you still sell on ChatGPT after Instant Checkout?

Yes, but not the way it was announced. The short history:

    • 29 September 2025. OpenAI launches Instant Checkout for US users, built with Stripe on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Shoppers pay inside the chat and merchants were reported to pay around 4% per in-chat order.
    • 24 March 2026. OpenAI lets merchants use their own checkout instead. A few dozen merchants had gone live, not the million-plus that was promised. In-chat payment stays only as a beta for select marketplace partners.
    • Today. ChatGPT handles discovery and comparison. When the buyer taps buy, your checkout opens in a browser tab or in-app browser, and you pay no OpenAI fee on that sale.

The pullback had a reason. Walmart reported that purchases inside ChatGPT converted at about a third of the rate of shoppers who clicked through to its own site. People still want to finish on a store they can see and trust, which is good news for anyone who owns their store.

Where AI shoppers can buy in 2026

ChatGPT is one of several assistants that now shop. As of October 2026:

AssistantHow a purchase happensWho can join
ChatGPTProduct feed for discovery, checkout on your siteShopify stores via agentic storefronts; others apply at chatgpt.com/merchants, approved US merchants
Google AI Mode and GeminiMerchant Center feed; checkout through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), Universal Cart since 15 October 2026Checkout: approved US merchants; product data: retailers globally
Microsoft CopilotCopilot Checkout via PayPal or StripeUS pilot, English-language merchants selling in USD
Amazon Buy for MeAmazon buys from your site on the shopper's behalfIncluded by default, opt out by email

The programmes are US-first, but the discovery side is not. ChatGPT search, Google AI Mode and Perplexity read the open web in every country, and that is how our own first client from an AI recommendation found DForce in September 2026: no feed, no programme, just pages an assistant could read and quote.

How to sell on ChatGPT: 5 steps for your store

    1. Build a product feed, not just a sitemap. ChatGPT expects required fields such as item_id, title, price and availability as a full snapshot at least daily, and accepts updates as often as every 15 minutes. Google needs a complete Merchant Center feed. Use real variants (size, colour, SKU) and GTINs where you have them.
    2. Make the feed and the checkout agree. If the feed says in stock at $49 and the checkout says $55 or sold out, the assistant learns not to trust you. Price, stock and shipping must come from the same source of truth.
    3. Write product pages for questions, not keywords. An assistant answers "a waterproof jacket under $100 that packs small", so the page needs the material, the weight, the size chart and the return policy in plain text, not in an image. Google says structured data is not required for its AI search, so keep schema markup for rich results but do not expect it to do the work alone.
    4. Make the product page a landing page. Shopify says half of AI-referred sessions land directly on a product page. That visitor never saw your home page, so the price, delivery terms and buy button must work on a phone without a detour.
    5. Decide which bots may read the store, then measure. Allow the crawlers of the assistants you want in robots.txt (OpenAI's is OAI-SearchBot), keep fraud rules ready for agent orders, and tag AI referrals in analytics so you can see what the channel brings.

Is selling through ChatGPT worth it yet?

The numbers say prepare now and keep your expectations honest. Adobe counted AI-referred traffic to US retail sites up 393% year on year in Q1 2026, and in March it converted 42% better than other traffic. Shopify said AI-driven traffic and orders tripled year on year in Q2. On the other side, Similarweb puts AI referrals at a low single-digit percentage of most sites' traffic. It is a small channel with good buyers, and the work it needs (clean data, honest pages, a fast mobile checkout) also helps search and ads.

How much it costs to make a store sell through ChatGPT

For the market price we used two published figures: Lazy Ants sells an agentic commerce readiness audit for $2,250 fixed, one week, and credits it against implementation work from $7,500. Our prices are a quarter of that, rounded down, with the traditional figure exactly 4 times ours:

    ScopeDForce, AI-firstTraditional development
Readiness audit of an existing store: feed, product data, pages, checkout, bot rules, written plan$560, about 10 working hours$2,240, one week (40 working hours)
Readiness work: feeds for ChatGPT and Google, product data cleanup, product pages, mobile checkout fixes, crawler rules, AI referral trackingfrom $1,875from $7,500

The work is 4 times cheaper and 4 times faster because AI writes the code and senior engineers direct and review it, so the same working feed and checkout take fewer hours, not less care. The timeline for readiness work depends on the catalogue and the platform and is fixed after the audit. Two related cases: a new store built agent-ready from day one is priced in how much an online store costs (from $1,500), and your own app inside ChatGPT is a separate build covered in how to build a ChatGPT app.

How we would do it at DForce

Feeds and integrations are not new to us, they just had other buyers. For Meest Post we built integrations with Prom.ua, OLX, Shafa and Rozetka, where the same rule applies: one source of truth for price and stock, or the marketplace stops showing you. For Sewing Lab, which sells around a hundred clothing models online, we built the system behind the store and automatic replies to buyers in chats.

We start with the audit, show you which of the five steps your store fails, and fix them in order of revenue impact. If you want to know whether your store is ready for AI shoppers, book a discovery call and send us the link.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you still sell directly inside ChatGPT? Only a few large partners can. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, and on 24 March 2026 it moved ordinary merchants to their own checkout: ChatGPT finds and compares the product, and the buyer pays on your site with no OpenAI fee on that sale. In-chat payment survives as a beta for select marketplace partners such as Etsy.

How do I get my products into ChatGPT shopping results? Shopify stores can enable the agentic storefronts channel in the admin. Other stores apply at chatgpt.com/merchants and send a product feed with the required fields such as item_id, title, price and availability, refreshed at least daily. Onboarding is limited to approved US merchants for now. Outside the US, ChatGPT still reaches your store through web search, so readable product pages matter everywhere.

How much does it cost to make an online store ready for ChatGPT? With an AI-first team like DForce, a readiness audit of an existing store costs $560 and takes about 10 working hours, and the fixes start from $1,875. A traditional agency charges 4 times more for the same scope: $2,240 for the audit and from $7,500 for the work, and takes 4 times longer, because there the code is written by hand while ours is written by AI and directed by senior engineers.

Is traffic from ChatGPT worth the effort for a store? It is small but growing and it buys well. Adobe counted AI-referred visits to US retail sites up 393% year on year in Q1 2026, converting 42% better than other traffic in March, while Similarweb puts AI referrals at a low single-digit share of most sites' traffic. Treat it as a new channel to prepare for now, not a replacement for search.
